Kenneth BrownNovember 18, 1926 ~ June 13, 2016 (age 89)
Kenneth Eugene Brown, an 89-year-old resident of Port Angeles, passed away at Laurel Place Assisted Living on June 13, 2016, due to unknown causes.
He was born in Bradford Township in a rural farmhouse in Chickasaw County, Iowa, to Frank G. Brown and Helen Grace Springer.
He attended high school in Nashua, Iowa, and went on to marry Marilyn Jean Coates there on September 25, 1948. They divorced in 1973.
Ken remarried on January 25, 1974, to Madelyn Ramona Cousin. Sadly, she passed away April 5, 2014.
He came to the Olympic Peninsula in the summer of 1947 as a seasonal fire control aide, again in the summer of 1950 as a seasonal park ranger and in 1977 as district scout executive for Boy Scouts of America. He was a 39-year resident of Port Angeles.
He was a member of the Congregational Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Iowa, a Masonic Lodge Junior Warden and a member of the Order of the Arrow.
Ken was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served as a radioman-gunner from November 22, 1944, to August 14, 1953. For his military service in the Korean War on scout bomber missions, Ken Brown received one Air Medal and one Gold Star in lieu of a second Air Medal after flying 150 (and perhaps more) missions.
At his decease, Ken Brown had one foot firmly planted in the Christian spiritual tradition and one foot firmly planted in the Native American spiritual tradition. In his final months, he reaffirmed his acceptance of Christ in his life.
The following prayer was among his favorite in the Native American tradition, "My Prayer" by Ernest Thompson Seton:
Great Spirit of my fathers, This is my prayer. Help me to feel thine urge and thy message. Help me to be a man, a man physically, thoughtfully, bravely and kindly. Help me to be just even to those who hate me, but above all things, help me to be kind.
If mine enemy is weak and faltering, help me to the good thought that I forgive him as a weak and needy brother.
Oh, Great Spirit, shew me the way of wisdom and help me to follow it without fear. Oh, Great Spirit of my father's, help me wholly to void my heart of fear, and of revenge which is the meanest form of fear.
Oh, God of my people and of my soul, help me to be a man. And this I ask for no one's sake but my own, for I need thy help.
He is survived by his former wife, Marilyn Coates; sons Garth Brown (Diane Lem) of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Burnet Brown of Ventura, California; daughters Barbara Brown (Bert Van Auker) of Ventura and Jeanne Brown of San Marcos, California; sister Janet (Jim) Nelson of Nashua, Iowa; and grandchildren John and Loren Van Auker of Ventura.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Madelyn Brown; father Frank G. Brown; mother Helen Grace Church Brown; and brother Dale Arthur Brown. - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/peninsuladailynews/obituary.aspx?n=Kenneth-Eugene-Brown&pid=180554938#sthash.qYVRoKlh.dpuf
